How to keep employee morale up during the coronavirus crisis

The threat of the coronavirus has impacted our lives in many ways. Many people are becoming increasingly worried as the confirmed cases and death toll rises every day. What’s more, the economic impact is huge and millions of people are losing their jobs. In the UK for example, up to two million workers have lost their jobs already, which means Covid-19 has wiped out the past five years of employment growth. Employee morale is declining as many fear for what may happen next.

Get the team together

People feel stronger when they’re together. That’s why it is important to help employees feel connected while working from home. Here are a few ideas:

  • Create a channel that enables everyone to easily communicate and collaborate as well as keep updated of company news/updates. Do this through your intranet, or use a tool like Microsoft Teams.
  • Schedule daily video check-ins or a weekly team meeting so that everyone gets an update on what their colleagues are working on (Note: make sure that you equip employees with high-quality headsets)
  • Plan for a weekly team virtual coffee break or lunch with all your team members to talk and chat about anything but work.
  • Host an online team building game to encourage employees to communicate and engage with colleagues.

During these challenging times, it’s necessary to be open and honest with your team about the status of business operations, potential effects of the crisis on people’s jobs or any changes that occur in their daily work.
